Black and White

With each of assignment from The Whole Cloth Experience, I look to apply the ideas from my doctoral research to the project. For this piece, each member of our group drew three ‘elements'(words) from the instructor at random. Our job was then to apply those elements to the design of a hat.

I drew:
-Black and White
-Shrink It!
-Use sequins

References that first came to mind were; a nun’s habit (I was raised in the Catholic church), the many art historical paintings of women from the 15th and 16th centuries which I have studied over the years, and many of the contemporary (read: haut couture) historical re-envisionings by women artists of my own era such as Sophia Copola’s Marie Antoinette (…I have always loved the cloak that Asia Argento ‘Madame du Barry’ wears when she is expelled from the castle in the early hours of the mourning as the Sun King lay dying).

The piece is still in progress, but here is what it looks like so far.
