Kindred Spirits

If you’ve been following the progress on my literature review comprehensive exam quilt, well, I have a confession to make. I’ve been seeing another quilt on the side..

As I’ve been working away on my literature review over the past 6 weeks I’ve also been working on a quilt composed of pieces of clothing  belonging to my husband, daughter and son during what have been to me, very special times we’ve shared together. I’ve lugged some of these piece of clothing around for years, literally from one coast of Canada to the other and back. In some cases I think that I was nervous to actually cut the pieces up, and while in other cases I may just not have been confident that the piece would actually work together. Either way, I finally felt that the time had come to take the plunge down memory lane. The piece isn’t finished as I intend to do quite a bit of embroidering on the top, but my daughter went fabric shopping with me last week and picked out the perfect blue polka-dot print fabric for the backing (I had a different pattern in mind when I realized that she was actually right about the choice) but as a family, I think that we’re happy about the direction it’s taking so far. I believe that the blanket is already beginning to tell a wonderful portion of our story together, and for that reason I wanted to share it.

These are a few images of the piece in progress.

  1. I just recognized Mikaya/Tate’s pants made from old sweater (can’t forget the star)! Dolly Parton sang a song called “Coat Of Many Colors”, my Mum loved that piece as she said she once owned one! This is a Quilt of Many Memories. That quilt will be part of the HoHo’s heirloom…..
